Getting Let Go (Twice!) Was Where I Found My Freedom Fuel.

Most people fear getting let go. It’s seen as a failure, a setback, a moment of deep uncertainty. I know because I felt it too. And yet, looking back, being let go—twice—was the best thing that ever happened to me.
The first time, I was thrown into the unknown. Unexpected and with a new very large mortgage to pay, there were some very big emotions at play.
I had always wanted to be a life coach, mentoring and coaching ran deep in my veins, but like many, I had responsibilities—a mortgage, bills, a lifestyle that needed maintaining. Therefore, I had never taken the plunge and committed to the dream.
Until life was turned upside down. The shock, panic and shame from being let go was overwhelming. And yet, it was the catapult I needed. I used the fire in my belly to propel me into what was next. I was absolutely not going to let getting fired define me.
I took the opportunity to get certified as a coach while I figured out plan B to pay the bills. I took a temporary role to reground myself before stepping into another full-time job.
I thought I had found the perfect balance: security in my job while building my coaching dream on the side. But the honeymoon period faded as I allowed my energy to be consumed by my full time role. Everything felt hard.
Then it happened again.
The second time around, I saw it differently. Instead of scrambling to replace my job, I saw it as the door swinging wide open—an invitation to step fully into the life I truly wanted. This time, I spent the time finding a new identity and healing the psychological injuries sustained from such jarring experiences. Then, I used it as the push I needed to rebrand, relaunch, and commit entirely to my passion - my coaching.
And here’s what I realized through the process: We are valuable for who we are, not the title on our LinkedIn profile.
It’s not the number of hours we work that defines us, how long we stay in a role, how much we hustle, or how many promotions we collect. What truly makes us valuable is how we show up each and every day — the way we lead, support, and bring value to our work and the people around us.
If you’re reading this and you’ve been let go, I want you to hear this: You are enough.
You can build a career that feels aligned with your authentic self. You can make an income in a way that energizes you instead of draining you. You can create a life that feels meaningful, instead of one dictated by job security alone.
And if you’re feeling isolated in this experience, know that you’re not alone.
The more I opened up about my experience, the more I realized just how common it was. I had deep, honest conversations with people who had been through the same thing—people who once felt shame, uncertainty, or fear but had come out the other side with a new perspective, just like I did, and just like I know you can.
So if this resonates with you, I want to give you a tool that helped me to process the big emotions and ground in who I am and how I impact my family and community.
This is your Freedom Fuel.
Freedom from shame, expectation and anxiety and transitioning to a new level of emotional and physical freedom.
To gather your Freedom Fuel I designed a tool called the Legacy Lens which will guide you towards your unique definition of freedom and illuminate your vision of true freedom.
The Legacy Lens isn’t about perfection—it’s about clarity. By identifying your legacy and your impact, you gain the insight of your true worth and value, outside of a job title. It will help you find a new identity that feels authentic, and energizing.
To access the FREE worksheet, add me on instagram @laken1990 and message me with the words ’Freedom Fuel’.
I also encourage you to reach out. Whether it’s to me, to your friends, your family, or your community, don’t navigate this moment alone. With the support of your community, this next chapter has something special for you, it is the one that sets you free and breaks you out of the confines of the system.
This change isn’t an ending—it’s the start of something better. Many new doors are about to open for you. The question is: Are you ready to walk through them?
